Illinois Judges Foundation
The Illinois Judges Foundation, a relatively new organization, was established in 2007 by the members of the Illinois Judges Association and received its 501(c) 3 status at that time. The mission of the organization is philanthropic in nature and purpose. Its membership is composed of both current sitting judges and retired judges from the state court level throughout the State of Illinois.
The IJF promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary; fosters awareness, respect and knowledge of the law, the legal system and the administration of justice; and facilitates diversity and inclusiveness in the judiciary and legal profession.
Presently, the IJF funds the following initiatives:
• American Bar Association's Judicial Intern Opportunity Program -- a summer judicial internship program comprised of first- or second-year minority or financially disadvantaged law students;
• "7 Reasons to Leave the Party" -- an award-winning program in which Illinois judges talk to students about the legal and personal consequences of drinking and driving.
• Judge Harold Sullivan $5,000 annual scholarship award to one of the nine Illinois law schools.
In keeping with the mission of the Foundation, other initiatives that could be considered for funding in the future include:
• Projects around the state to assist the poor and under-represented better understand court proceedings, make informed decisions, find help, and present their cases in court;
• Programs that mentor or teach children and young adults about the legal system and the role of judges and lawyers within it.
